My New OLYMPUS OM-D E-M10

Just Camera stuff

Intro

I recently bought my second “Serious” camera, My first one was a Sony Alpha 200. Here are some of the last pics i took with it:

Before that, I had 2 SLR’S (Both Zenit’s) and after, a bunch of compact cameras that are now in peaces.

First Impressions and Size

And first impressions, wow it’s small, comparing to all my other cameras, its in between compacts and slr’s. I was expecting it to be a little uncomfortable in the hand, but surprisingly fine, except my pinky being kinda smashed but it’s only a little uncomfy.

As for feel, it feels pretty good, seems like metal, just a step under the ZENIT-E.

Images

As for the image quality is, well good! from the first outing I went, I currently only have the kit lens that came with the camera, will print a adapter to my Helios 44 2 which makes beautiful bokeh. Here are some images I took:

Notes

Note the quality is not the same in my site as reality since I want to compress the images for bandwidth reasons, but I have uploaded one picture straight from the camera so if you want to pixel peep or look at metadata. Here it is:

On the topic of pixel peeping, you might be shocked to hear that the sensor is “only” 16 megapixels. I’m not going to go in depth about it but megapixels aren’t everything.

Price, Batteries & Others

My old DSLR had 10.2mpx, and new has 16, which is only 6 more, but for the price range I had in mind, I could only get up to 20mpx cameras (Sony a5000) but I chose the e-m10 for one standout feature, the sensor has stabilisation, IBIS which is quite amazing (more info below). on the topic of price, I paid £150 after negotiating for the camera with all its accessories, and a 16gb SD card. I bought off Aliexprsss a extra battery, using my Ali coins, the final cost of the battery was £4. Ppl recomend to get a extra battery for long shooting days (I tested 400~ pics till it started flashing a red battery icon) Took 2.5Hrs to charge. Mirrorless take more batteries than DSLR’S.

IBIS, OIS.. Or 4 Mpx

Back to image stabiliser. I’ve got to say I was expecting to be minor, but it really is quite something, now, why did I chose that over what was effectively a extra 4mpx, because I like vintage lenses, and well the old lenses won’t have OIS (optical image stabilisation) and I always shoot handheld, rarely on tripods. Here is a short video showing you how well it works.

Cost Of Lenses

And since I’m talking about lenses I do have bad news, everyone I talked to said micro 4/3 lenses with autofocus are cheap and easy to find, which is not the case, I guess “cheap” is subjective but I guess I’m coming from Sony A / Minolta AF which you can get a superzoom 70-300mm for £30 with autofocus! Comparing that to £90 for a only 200mm zoom lens with autofocus for the micro 4/3 lenses…

Viewfinder

And yet again, on the topic of “bad” there is one problem I have, I should of seen it coming but didn’t. the viewfinder. well let’s say it is pretty bad, when I first got the camera I looked thru the viewfinder to see a pretty low quality image, I thought oh no this is bad but the viewfinder was bad, the front screen is pretty good tho. I guess it’s something to get used to.

Proprietary..!

I will touch upon this because it’s pretty annoying, The USB connector is there proprietary CB-USB6 cable or something like that, Sure my old sony had a cable too but micro USB was well established when the E-M10 came out. The Sony a5000 has microusb..! Hey at least they dont use XD Cards like there μ series of Olympus. Full SD!
