Intro
What is a SDR, Simply put, it is a device that can listen to anything wireless, including: wifi router, walkie talkie, police, broadcast radio, TV, Airplanes and a whole lot more!
Why am i making a post about sdr’s? because some people don’t know they exist and I’d love to show what a great tool it is, you can really listen to anything and there is activity on air no matter if your in a dence city or life in a farm in the middle of nowhere, ofc less activity in the farm areas.
SDR’S mainly require a computer or phone to use, excluding one off’s like the HackrfOne
Here is what a program like SDR++ looks like, I select frequencies, listen in, decode digital signals, whatever you want to.
Note for more advanced listening and decoding (Plus transmissions if using a transmitter capable device, sdrangel is amazing too.)
Here im using the RTL-SDR A Good starter kit will cost about £40, On the cheap side (affiliate) it costs £15, I have not tested the ultra cheap ones tho.
A little more stuff that you can do:
- Decode weather satalite images
- Find Aircraft exact positions with ADS-B (1090 MHz)
- Listen to Amateur bands like 70cm (430 to 440 MHz) & 2m (144 to 146 MHz)
- Decode/Analise Key fobs and other signals with URH
- Listen to FM radio like thoes kid walkie talkies
I mean seriously the list can go on, you can do seemingly endless stuff, If this didnt at least peak your interest, idk what will. And that is where I end my short topic, Go get yourself a RTL-SDR As a starter, Great starter SDR. (You can get the super cheap’o “RTL” Sdr’s but they are prob’s garbage compared to the real one) And one last word of wise, Antennas make the biggest difference.
